Stuck on Highway 80, Neosublime 16

Stuck on Highway 80, Neosublime 16

2022, oil on canvas, 44 x 74 inches

This is an aerial view of tidal flooding on Highway 80, the only road to Tybee Island. In 1950 minor flooding occurred every few years. In 2012 it flooded every three months. In 2016 Hurricane Matthew broke the previous sea level record by one and a half feet. Irma, the next hurricane was almost as high. Sea levels are predicted to be even 1-6 feet higher in 2100. Savannah was founded on a bluff, where it would be protected from flooding and storm surges. Although most of the historic downtown will withstand a 6-foot rise, other parts of the city will not.

Never Used to be This High, Neosublime 18

2022, oil on canvas, 36 x 48 inches.

What will Tybee Island look like in 2040? Possibly ocean waves will be landing on the walkway instead of the beach. A NOAA tide gauge at nearby Fort Pulaski has measured over 10 inches of sea level rise since 1935. Now flooding is so frequent that people on Tybee Island are often prevented from leaving the island, especially during king tides. Some people are selling their homes worried that the frequently flooding and destruction will eventually lower the value of their properties.

A monstrously large wave strikes the rocky shore with megatons of energy. Humans are enjoying a moment of picture taking unaware of their impending demise. A metaphoric representation of the insidious nature of global warming and sea level rise. The subliminal fear is that if the mean global temperature were to return to the normal of mid-twentieth century, it would still take centuries for the sea level to stop rising.

2022, oil on canvas, 50 x 60 inches, overlaying painting

This artwork is made of two paintings. One is a beautiful, colorful portrait of a pine forest. While being displayed it is torn from the wall, by actors posing as viewers, to reveal a mural painting underneath. The mural shows the same forest which has been transformed into a ghost forest. A big box store in the distance shows that product is more important than environment.
